What is a living will?

A living will is not technically a legal term. In Ontario, a living will is called a power of attorney for personal care. It's also known as a health-care proxy or durable power of attorney for health care. A "living will" allows you to provide instructions about what level of medical treatment you want in the event that you are unable to verbally express your wishes. It is a written document that enables you to make your own decisions and ensure that others are aware of these decisions. You could be specific about what treatments you want. For example, whether you want to be put on life-support; which, if any, organs you want to donate when you die and what type of home care you wish.
